Rules of the Politics Forums

2009-01-21 01:10:22 by RyanLucifer

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. IT WILL CHANGE TIME TO TIME. ALSO, IT'S UNOFFICIAL, NOT THE OFFICIAL RULES YET MODS STILL PLAY BY THEM. IT IS JUST A GUIDE TO HELP THOSE NEW TO THE POLITICS FORUMS. BY THE WAY, IT HAS BEEN APPROVED BY MODS.

EDIT: THESE RULES WILL CHANGE, BUT THIS ACCOUNT WILL BE INACTIVE DUE TO THESE RULES. SO, LONG STORY SHORT, IF YOU HAVE A SUGGESTION, PM MY MAIN ACCOUNT, BRIANETRIUS. THANKS.

For a while this thought's been going around in my head, so here it finally is. The official yet unofficial rules of politics forum.

1.DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT THINK THE POLITICS FORUM IS A PLACE FOR +1 POSTS.
I'm looking at all of you guys from general. Yes, general's a great place to be where you can post stuff and no one cares. That's why it's so damn strict, because you guys act like little 12 year-olds who think it's fun to joke and insult and all that other crap. Well, guess what? THIS ISN'T THE PLACE FOR IT! The politics forums are here so people can have a good argument over subjects, so DON'T MESS AROUND HERE. If we find you, we will kick you out. Here is an example of someone from general who tries to be a smartass.

2. DO NOT MAKE A "I HATE AMERICA/AMERICANS/U.S.A OR ANY COUNTRY" THREAD.
This one's a biggy. We already have billions of these threads, and it is always flame bait. For Christ sake, use the search bar. Look, over 1000 hits on the keyword America. Seriously, don't make a new one.
Speaking of which..........

3. USE THE SEARCH BAR.
So, you think you have an original thread. Well, think again. Use the search bar. Yes, it's a pain in the ass, but here it's okay. Here, whenever new developments happen on an old story we want to hear it, so post it in the old thread about it. Also, use common sense. IF there's 2-3 topics on a thread you about to start, don't start another one. Here's two examples of people who didn't use the search bar. See how their threads turned up?

4. DON'T START A "WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN/WHO'S YOUR CANDIDATE/WHY _____ SUCKS" OR VARIATION OF.
Again, we have like 20 of these. Post about the election in this thread.

5. ELABORATE ON WHAT YOU SAY.
Don't just say something to say something. Really think about it. Back it up with good, well developed thoughts. Also, if you start a thread make sure that it's written in a way that people can argue intelligently over. Also, give a reason for the thread. Here's an example of what could have been a good discussion but failed.

6. IF YOU ARE QUOTING SOMETHING, PROVIDE SOURCES.
This one's the one that I see quite often. Give us a link to what you are quoting, or else we will think that you have just made it up so it helps prove your argument. Here's a good example.

7. HAVE MANNERS.
Look, we are not looking for a fight. Nor are we looking for a treaty between two different sides. We are looking for a good argument over a subject that can be argued over. Also, no name calling because that really makes you look immature and frankly, we don't like immature people. we want good mature people who will gladly argue politely. Again, here's what not to do.

8. DO NOT INSULT OTHER PEOPLE'S BELIEFS/OPINIONS.
Hey, I don't make fun of you, right? The same goes to everyone. You want respect you have to give respect to other people. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, so don't make fun of them. Here's a thread with some in it, and it didn't turn out pleasant.

9. DO NOT MAKE IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD THREAD.
Christ, I see these every now and then and I think to myself, was it worth it to waste time of something I already knew? If the answer is yes, DON'T POST IT. Jesus Christ, over 3000 hits under the search bar.

10. REGARDING THE REGULAR LOUNGE THREAD.

1. IF YOU NEED TO ASK IF YOU CAN POST, THEN YOU CAN'T. (Here's a hint: Majority of your posts must be in Politics)
2. NO OBVIOUS ALTS.
3. UNLESS YOU ARE A REGULAR, DO NOT POST RANDOM STUFF.
4. NO TALKING ABOUT THE LOUNGE.
5. NO POLITICS IN THE LOUNGE.
6. DO NOT GO "HEY, I'll THINK I'll JOIN THE LOUNGE"

11. TROLLS.
Ignore them. Here, they are either a) looking for a +1 post, b) being obviously a troll, c) just being a total ass period. You can spot the obvious trolls here; they don't contribute much to an argument, they use bad grammar, and they don't back up their sources. So, ignore them.

12. HAVE GOOD ENGLISH.
Now, for most people on the internet this maybe a tough one. Don't use shortcuts and bad grammar. It makes you look that much more immature. So please, check over what you're saying.

13. IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE, DON'T FREAK OUT.
Hey, we all make one at some point. Here, you make one, yes we will call you out and yes you will be laughed at but after that, we'll probably forget. So, get off your butt and come back strong.

14. IF YOU SEE A RESOLVED THREAD OR ONE THAT CANNOT BE PUSHED ANY FURTHER, JUST LET IT SLIDE OFF THE PAGE.
Okay, I see this a lot. Hey, take a good look at a thread. If it's stupid or can't go any further or what not do not, I repeat, do not bump it. Example. The OP stated that he didn't agree with the topic later, so it should have died. Or, even better, PM a mod and they will take care of it.

15. DO NOT MAKE A THREAD ARGUING OVER GOD OR WHATEVER.
This only starts more pointless arguments. Rather, post all of them in here, the atheism vs. non-atheism thread. OR here, the science vs. everything else thread.

16. DO NOT HOLD GRUDGES.
After a certain point you will notice the bias and other things about the politics regulars. You may not agree to way they say but as stated earlier you have to respect that. So don't hold a grudge against someone you know. Every time you start a new thread it's like starting over. This guy (GunnerX86) is an example of what not to do.

17. DO NOT BUMP YOUR OWN THREAD.
If it is really something good or interesting, people would post in it.

18. DO NOT FLOOD THE FORUM WITH LITTLE IN YOUR POST.
This could fall under rule number 1, but I think it deserves otherwise. Look, if I look down the forum and I see one guy's name about 5-6 times within 1 hour then I know that he either a) is a troll/alt, b) has very little in his post contributing almost nothing to the conversation or c) a newbie. So, don't flood. It makes you look very immature and hurts your reputation.

19. HEY, IT'S OKAY TO DOUBLE POST, BUT ONLY UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS.
If you are from any other forum than you know that double posting is a *gasp* easy way to get yourself banned. Well, here there are exceptions to that rules. These rules are
1. IF YOU DIDN'T INCLUDE SOMEONE ELSE'S ARGUMENT WHICH YOU WANT TO RESPOND TO.
2. IF THERE IS MORE INFORMATION THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE ARGUMENT/DISCUSSION.
3. UPDATE ON A HOT TOPIC.

20. PLEASE MAKE YOUR SUBJECT APPROPRIATE.
If it doesn't, again, makes you look immature, and people won't like you. Example of what not to do.

22. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT ADVERTISE SOMETHING EVEN THOUGH IT HAS TO DO WITH POLITICS.
This is only spam and will get disregarded, if not deleted.

23. ALL OTHER BBS RULES APPLY.
You should have figured this out by now. If not, read them here.

24. If YOU ANYTHING, PM A MOD.
This little thing is often over looked, and yet it's the best way to not get you banned or thread locked. Just send a friendly pm to anyone of the politics forum regular mods, and maybe they can help you out.

25. (Because she told me to.) DO WHATEVER SEVENSEIZE TELLS YOU TO, BECAUSE SHE'S AWESOME.

26. DON'T BASE AN ARGUMENT OFF AN EMOTIONAL SLANT.
This will make you look like an ass and we will laugh at you. Seriously. And, there's no use in debating, because you are debating someone's beliefs and not something that can be challenged. This makes the debate worthless. See here for example.

27. DO NOT QUESTION WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE POLITICS FORUM.
Because this is pointless. It's a mod's decision, not yours. This board is for the enjoyment of everyone, so if one person's complaining, the rest of the board suffers. So please, keep it to yourself. A mod will decide if it is politic-worthy. EXAMPLE. (Plus, a mod posted this. A MOD. If you don't this should be in the politics section, then you're sadly mistaken.) Also, don't complain if a thread is wasting your time. It's your own damn fault, no one else. Example.

28. USE YOUR EYES, NOT YOUR DICK.
Yes, I'm looking at some of the newbs on this. Look, always, ALWAYS, check the front page before making a topic. 9 times out of 10 there's already going to be a topic about what you're about to post, so post it there, don't make you're own thread. Also, don't be a dick too, and say "WELL IT'S MY OPINION AND I THINK IT DESERVES A ANOTHER THREAD." because in the end, it doesn't. It has the same value as everyone else. And did each of them make a thread? Nope, so don't be an ass.

29. NO POLL THREADS.
Even though they might have to do with politics, this isn't the place for them. Especially if it has to do with another topic which has it's own thread.

30. DON'T MAKE A THREAD FOR YOUR HOMEWORK.
We're not here to help you through school. Do your own damn work.

31. NO OBAMA THREADS.
See the discussion why here.

32. FREEMASON/9/11 TRUTH/CONSPIRACY THREADS.
Why? Because it's a bunch of bullshit that can't be proven.

TL;DR, The short version:
